EMBRACING LOW CARBON CONCRETE

We have made much progress in increasing our understanding of the behavior of cement and concrete. However, concerns over excessive carbon dioxide generation during cement manufacturing continue to loom over the industry. There needs to be a deeper exploration of the positive role that cement and concrete can play in improved energy efficiency and carbon emissions related to the infrastructure through more efficient manufacturing processes, construction practices, better design, and more durable structures – all aimed at improving sustainability within the industry. While there is growing awareness of the problem, and several initiatives to make concrete more sustainable are underway, there is still no consensus on the best approach to improving the sustainability of the material or the structures for which it is used. The aim of the Anna Maria XXIV Workshop is to explore these issues.  We are therefore inviting presentations dealing with (but not necessarily limited to) the following topic areas:

•              Carbon neutrality

•              Reducing clinker content in cement Concrete durability issues

•              Carbonation of fresh and hardened concrete

•              What do we really mean by “100-year” service life?

•              In-situ assessment of durability/remaining service life

•              Service life models/predictions

•              Tests to predict/measure durability

•              In-situ assessment of durability/remaining service life

•              Concrete mix design for durability

•              Corrosion of steel

•              Can nanomaterials make an impact?

•              Other sustainability topics

•              Any other related topics

The purpose of the workshop will be to bring together people from the different sectors involved (engineers, educators, researchers, specifiers, material producers) to discuss these technical issues. The goal is to provide input on future directions in both research and practice.

We look forward to seeing you on beautiful Anna Maria Island in October.
